Growing easy summer peas for all
One of my absolute favourite crops to grow in summer is peas. Simple and straightforward, they are a great vegetable for beginners or children to have a go. Be warned. Many of them may not make it to the pot as they are delicious straight from the pod!
To start you need a plate, kitchen roll and a packet of seeds. Starting the peas off inside, by sprouting them on damp paper, is a great way to avoid little creatures, such as mice, from digging up your newly planted crop.
Simply wet a piece of kitchen roll (or similar absorbent paper) on a plate. Then place the peas and cover them with another piece of damp kitchen roll. Keep an eye and in a two or three days they will have sprouted and be ready to plant.
What to do when your peas have sprouted
Now your peas have sprouted you can plant them. Easy peasy! Now you can plant your peas directly into the ground or into a pot or trough. Whatever your choice, plant them about an inch deep and a couple of inches apart. You can plant them a little closer buy try not to make them too crowded.
Peas will need some type of support for their tendrils to grab onto. You can use small canes or some people just use long twigs or last years raspberry canes they pruned and save.
Your sprouted peas will look something like the picture above. Don’t leave them too long or they will become tangled and difficult to separate without damage.

Next, make sure you plant your sticks a few inches apart from each other and secured them so the peas are held secure as they grow.
Poke small holes about two inches apart and place your peas in. Then pat the compost down gently. Finally, wrap string around the bamboo holes so the peas have something to grip as they grow.
All you need to do now is water and wait.
