Coming up with 5 great reasons to grow your own vegetables was not tricky for me. The challenge was to keep it to five, so I focused on ones which matter most. I have had a go at my own vegetable garden sporadically over the years and always loved the results. Sadly, bringing up children and working full time meant I always let something else get in the way. I would do it for a couple of years then let it go.

Once I was fortunate enough to cut back on work, I had more than enough time to indulge myself and I haven’t looked back. If you are like I was and really want to grow your own vegetables but struggle with time, try keeping it small and manageable. Some home grown is better than none. 5 great reasons to grow your own vegetables

Reducing food waste and miles

Walking into your garden and picking your food reduces your food mile to just steps. You only grow and pick what you need, consequently your food waste will drop significantly.

Knowing your foods origin

When you grow your own vegetables you know where they have come from. you also know how they have been grown and whether they are organic.

Eating truly fresh vegetables

You can’t get fresher than this. Growing food in your own garden means you are able to cook it immediately before any vitamin loss occurs. Healthier all round.

Being able to grow different varieties

You control what seeds or seedlings you buy. You can investigate different varieties opening you up to a world of flavour.

Eating better flavoured food!

Home grown, fresher food is always packed with more flavour. You can choose varieties grown for flavour (rather than size) and there is no time for that flavour to degrade. It’s a win, win!
